Spatial Diagram
I began my process by mapping out particular spaces I would like to have in my gym using a bubble diagram. Each bubble represents an idea as to how my spaces are going to be linked and the size allocation. From my research I recognise the importance of planning spaces for purpose. I have considered the size allocation gyms currently give their spaces to gather an understanding of their importance. Gym equipment dominates a large portion of space, so I have given the communal area the most room to fit a sufficient amount of equipment. |
Following the bubble diagram, I began to plan the spaces into a floor plan layout so I could understand how the space could operate as a gym. I decided to split the gym onto two levels; top being a private work out space and the ground floor for communal activities. Creating two floors divides the spaces for their separate purposes preventing noise from the communal area from disturbing the people upstairs. Beyond the toilets is access via either a lift or stairs to the second floor. It is important to have both methods of accessibility to facilitate the diversity of users of the space, it also enables employees to transport heavy objects or equipment.

The image drawn presents my concept of fun theory to my design. My research explained how by making something fun it could change people’s behaviour and attitudes; in this case exercise. My design shows an interactive game built into gym equipment, which adds an element of fun to the repetitious nature of these exercises. The game involves a rowing race with a time limit. I would like there to be options to alter the time, total amount of reps and speed so that it doesn’t cause any injury to the user.

Using grass for my outdoor space enables people to connect with natural elements as oppose to a hard flooring material which doesn't produce the same response.
A majority of my finishes are natural materials, not only for the concept of emotional intelligence but because they are sustainable materials which leave a lower carbon footprint. For example, the living wall in the workout spaces and the high usage of timber. Emotions are very important in this design as my main focus is based on emotional wellbeing and feelings of connectedness to nature. This is a response to my survey results conveying a majority of people feeling more comfortable exercising outside. |
